Oregeon Tilth - Organic CertifierOregon Tilth

Sweet Wheat® is proud to have designated nonprofit Oregon Tilth* as the organization suited to assure that every stage of its production is 100% organic. Oregon Tilth exemplifies Sweet Wheat’s commitment to promoting sustainable growing practices that promote environmental health, while producing a clean and healthful food supply.

About Oregon Tilth

In the late 1970’s a group of concerned regional farmers and environmentally conscious consumers, faced with a rapid decline in the quality of food and increasingly degraded farmland, joined to form Oregon Tilth.

From its beginning this nonprofit group has been dedicated to restoring and maintaining a naturally sustainable ecosphere and developing of a set of standards that define what organic farming is, and the exact nature of organic foods.

Not only has Oregon Tilth set standards for certifying organic farms, foods, and food products throughout the Pacific Northwest and Northern California, it has helped the U.S. Department of Agriculture set federal standards for organic certification—standards later adopted in many other regions and countries.

Oregon Tilth Certification Program

The Oregon Tilth Certified Organic (OTCO) symbol is an internationally recognized guarantee of organic integrity. Organic certification ensures that the agreed upon conventions of organic agricultural systems are being practiced not only by growers, but by all who handle and process organic food, feed and fiber. OTCO accomplishes this with a combined system of strict production standards, on-site inspections, and legally binding contracts to protect the producers and buyers of organic products.

Over the years OTCO has made its certification materials available to people in many states and countries in such specialties as:

  • Commercial producers of organic crops and livestock
  • Processors of organic foods, feed and fiber
  • Handlers of organic products such as packers, brokers, distributors and wholesalers
  • Marketers of processed or co-packed organic products
  • Restaurants & Retailers specializing in organic fare

While continuing its original educational mission, Oregon Tilth helps an ever-increasing number of food producers to return hundreds of square miles of formerly degraded land to earth-and-human-friendly organic land use and healthy food production.
